Peter Templeton, senior vice president of global market development at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), has been selected as an incoming director to the World Green Building Council Board of Directors. Templeton was appointed to the Board for his leadership in the green building movement and dedication to improving the sustainability of buildings, both in the U.S. and around the world.

“Peter has been a true champion of sustainability, and has worked tirelessly to transform the industry and position green building as a one of the most effective solutions to climate change,” said Terri Wills, CEO of the World Green Building Council. “It is this commitment, expertise and strong leadership that has earned his place on our Board of Directors. Together with our fellow directors, I look forward to working with Peter further as we to seek to create a world in which greener buildings lead to a better quality of life for everyone, everywhere.” 

Templeton joins an influential group in the building and construction industry. The WorldGBC Board of Directors is comprised of senior leaders from 15 Green Building Councils around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Jordan, Singapore, and the U.K. The Board guides the strategy of the WorldGBC and ensures that it successfully delivers on its mission to champion green building leadership at the country level and foster a network of knowledge, inspiration and practical support for member countries.

In his current role at USGBC, Templeton works to expand the reach and effectiveness of market transformation efforts in communities worldwide. Previously, he served as the first president of the Green Business Certification, Inc., which administers third-party project certification and professional credentialing for LEED. During his tenure, GBCI certified over 200 million square meters of new and existing buildings, and awarded more than 200,000 credentials to green building professionals in more than 135 countries.

Previously, Templeton served as USGBC’s senior vice president of education and research. He joined USGBC as one of its first employees immediately following the launch of LEED and served as the director for LEED and international programs until July 2005. Prior to joining USGBC, Peter worked as a program manager and environmental planner on international development projects promoting sustainable land use and resource management best practices.
